O estilo da Jeanette Winterson é curioso e intrigante. Pode parecer simples, mas há inúmeras passagens fortes que merecem reflexão. O eterno conflito entre religião e sexualidade é o tema desse livro, e o impacto de ambos na mente de uma adolescente que se vê dividida entre seguir os ensinamentos de seu Deus ou seu coração. O forte da autora é que ela consegue construir personagens emocionalmente tão ricos e complexos que a ação acaba se tornando secundária.
