For years the situation has been 'deteriorating'. Bow all over South Africa the cities are battlegrounds, Bam and Maureen Smales - enlightened, liberal whites - are rescued from the terror by their servant, July, who leads them to refuge in his native village. What happens to the Smales, and to July, mirrors the changes in the world - and gives us glimpses into a chasm of hatred and misunderstanding.
