Irene Stanley thought her world had come to an end when her fifteen-year-old son, Shep, was murdered in a robbery at their Oregon home. Daniel Robbin, who had spent his teenage years in and out of trouble, gave himself up to the police and was imprisoned in the State Penitentiary.

Irene, having reached the brink of suicide, comes to the realization that to survive she needs to overcome her grief and her hate for Robbin, and that she must face the secrets that she suspects surround Shep's murder. She turns full circle, defying both her family and the church, and finds that she is not only capable of forgiveness for the man who murdered her son, but also she comes to terms with understanding much more about events that happened that fateful afternoon back in Carlton. And perhaps the most painful realization of all, how little they as a family understood Shep.

Amor, ódio e perdão!!

A.D.O.R.E.I!!!! O livro é totalmente envolvente. Iniciei num dia e terminei no outro....não conseguia largar a leitura.
É uma estória bastante triste. Gira em torno da tragédia de uma família após o assassinato de Shep, um menino de 15 anos.
As dificuldades dos pais em lidar com este sofrimento, com muita dor, principalmente da mãe Irene, que era muito ligada a este filho.
O desejo de vingança, a espera durante 19 anos que o assassino seja condenado a pena de morte e no final o perdão.
Os capítulos são intercalados entre os acontecimentos na casa da família e a vida na prisão. Os anos vão passando até chegar o momento da execução de Daniel, o rapaz que atirou em Shep.
Ao longo da narração são revelados segredos de família que mudam o final da estória e que, particularmente, me emocionaram muito.
Achei incrível a forma de escrever desta autora. Ela conseguiu descrever os personagens de uma forma muito real, fazendo com que o leitor sinta as emoções e o sofrimento junto com eles. No início você sente raiva do assassino e nos capítulos seguintes consegue sentir pena e compaixão por ele (pelo menos foi assim que eu senti).
Com certeza um dos melhores livros que li ultimente e vai para a lista dos meus favoritos por ser marcante e especial.
Recomendo para quem gosta de livros profundos, intensos, que emocionam e mexem com os sentimentos nos fazendo pensar e imaginar o que faríamos naquela situação. Muuuito bom!
