Em 1985 foi estudar nos Estados Unidos, e depois do massacre da praça da Paz Celestial, em 1989, decidiu não mais retornar a seu país. É professor de inglês na Universidade Emory, em Atlanta. Além de A espera, vencedor do National Book Award de 1999 e do PEN/Faulkner, publicou In the pound (romance), Ocean of words, Under the red flag (contos), Between silences e Facing shadows (poemas).
