It tells of the quest of Laochra, a young female member of the Ash clan. She has to defeat the Demon Lord who seeks power over all three Kingdoms.

The novel begins with a raid on the Ash clan camp by the hostile Yew clan who are in the service of the Demon Lord. Laochra joins the battle despite the fact that she is too young to be a warrior as well as being the wrong sex.

Laochra is injured in this battle and fed some blood of a Yew warrior who had sold his soul to the Demon Lord. She gains some of the Demon Lords power; this weakens him and he wants it back.
Together with elite Ash warriors, Laochra embarks on her quest to vanquish the Demon Lord.
This quest takes her far from home into unfamiliar territories where she faces capture by dwarves allied to the Demon Lord; betrayal by traitors within her own people and extreme physical and mental hardship.
