The Book of Lost Tales stands at the beginning of the entire conception of Middle-earth and Valinor for the Tales were the first form of the myths and legends that came to be called The Silmarillion. Embedded in English legend and English association, they are set in the narrative frame of a great westward voyage over the Ocean by a mariner named Eriol to the lonely Isle where the Elves dwelt; from them he learned their true history, the Lost Tales of Elfinesse. In the Tales are found the earliest accounts of Gods and Elves, Dwarves, Balrogs and Orcs; of the Silmarils and the Two Trees of Valinor; of the geography and cosmology of Tolkien’s invented world.

Difícil de ler, porém incrível.

The Book of Lost Tales I é um livro muito difícil de ser lido em inglês, já que a linguagem utilizada por Tolkien é arcaica e muitas vezes não pode ser encontrada em dicionários atuais. As notas, feitas por Christopher Tolkien, também dificultam um pouco o ritmo da leitura. Ainda assim, não é uma tarefa impossível lê-lo. O livro conta as histórias iniciais que posteriormente se tornaram O Silmarillion, do ponto de vista de Eriol, um homem que conseguiu navegar até Tol Ëressea. Alguns escritos datam de 1917 e são os primeiros feitos por Tolkien. Vale ressaltar que muita coisa é diferente, inclusive nomes, do que posteriormente tornou-se o Silmarillion. Porém, muitas histórias servem também como complemento ao Silmarillion, já que são detalhadas no nível do Senhor dos Anéis. Esse livro é apenas para o grande fã de Tolkien, quem viu apenas o filme ou gostou do livro mas não se interessa muito pela mitologia inventada por Tolkien, certamente vai achar o livro péssimo.
