The Metamorphoses is an 8 AD Latin narrative poem by the Roman poet Ovid, considered his magnum opus. Comprising 11,995 lines, 15 books and over 250 myths, the poem chronicles the history of the world from its creation to the deification of Julius Caesar within a loose mythico-historical framework.

Ovid's sensuous and witty poem begins with the creation of the world and brings together a dazzling array of mythological tales, ingeniously linked by the idea of transformation - often as a result of love or lust - where men and women find themselves magically changed into extraordinary new beings. Including the well-known stories of Daedalus and Icarus, Pyramus and Thisbe, Pygmalion, Perseus and Andromeda, and the fall of Troy.

Ovid took inspiration from the genre of metamorphosis poetry. One of the most influential works in Western culture, the Metamorphoses has inspired such authors as Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, and William Shakespeare.

Ovídio, diferente de Virgílio e Homero, não focou sua obra na narração de apenas um momento. Metamorfoses é uma coletânea de mitos que formam um longo poema épico cujo tema é a tranformação.

Vários mitos são relambrados ou simplesmente expostos como Hércules, Eco, Apolo e Dafne, Aracne e Minerva no sentido de serem fundamentais para a reescrita da história romana - vale lembrar do esforço fundametal feito pelos antigos romanos para refazem sua história de forma que pudessem assumir a posição de verdadeiros herdeiros da sociedade grega.

Os versão são belos, deixando transparecer a maravilha do autor com esse processo histórico-religioso que é o formador do mito.
