Que livro emocionante!

Para você que, como eu, está chegando nele já na década de 2020, te peço para imaginar que está assistindo um episódio de Twilight Zone dirigido por Jordan Peele. Captou a essência da coisa? Pois bem, essa é a sensação dessa leitura!

Só que aí é que tá! Esse romance foi escrito em 1995, quando o apelo popular do horror negro era infinitesimal se comparado com os dias de hoje. Com vinte e nove anos na época, a autora trabalhava como jornalista e deixou o manuscrito de seu romance de estreia por nove meses engavetado antes de encarar o medo de uma recusa para publicá-lo. Só consigo pensar, felizardos somos nós por ela ter vencido seu medo!

Com o perdão do trocadilho, chega a ser surreal como esse romance de menos de trezentas páginas conseguiu trançar de forma tão bem construída as dificuldades de uma família negra numa sociedade racista, o folclore africano relacionado ao medo da morte, a verossimilhança psicológica das personagens, e o quê de surrealismo que paira por toda a obra. Como bem diria D. Scot Miller, "call it afro-surreal"!

Espero de todo o coração que essa obra venha a receber uma edição brasileira em breve, pois trata-se de uma leitura emocionante e necessária sobre família, luto e como desapegar quando necessário.
