The dramatic rescue in May 1940 of British troops fleeing from the Nazi war machine at Dunkirk was not just about what happened at sea and on the beaches. The evacuation would never have succeeded had it not been for the tenacity of the British soldiers who stayed behind to fight on so that the rest of the Army could be saved. Outnumbered and outgunned by the advancing panzers, these brave young men stood their ground, combining a dogged determination to do their duty with occasional acts of spetacular heroism. Although they and their officers rightly concluded that some German units would be taking no prisoners, they were instructed not to give way until they had fired their last bullets. They were to fight to the last man.
