In Woke Racism, McWhorter reveals the workings of this new religion, from the original sin of 'white privilege' and the weaponization of cancel culture to ban heretics, to the evangelical fervour of the 'woke mob.' He shows how this religion that claims to 'dismantle racist structures' is actually harming his fellow black Americans by infantilizing black people, setting black students up for failure, and passing policies that disproportionately damage black communities. The new religion might be called 'antiracism,' but it features racial essentialism that's barely distinguishable from racist arguments of the past.

Fortunately, for all of us, it's not too late to push back against woke racism. McWhorter shares scripts and encouragement with those trying to deprogramme friends and family. And most importantly, he offers a roadmap to justice that actually will help, not hurt, black people.

Uma crítica a um perfil específico da luta anti-racista

Li esse livro após o Woke, inc. e ele me pareceu um diagnóstico muito mais preciso sobre como as coisas chegaram a até aqui e também sobre as consequências das atitudes de uma parcela do movimento anti-racista, que o autor chama de cultura Woke.
O livro é particularmente revelador para pessoas que são simpáticas à luta anti-racista, mas que em vários momentos já se sentiram desconfortáveis com algumas ações supostamente restauradoras da justiça ou com o clima geral que se estabelece em vários contextos onde a problemática do racismo surge (a sensação mais reveladora é quando você, mesmo achando que está do mesmo lado de uma pessoa, não se sente desconfortável em discordar, sob a ameaça de ser vista como racista).
A analogia que o autor (professor de linguística da universidade de Columbia) faz entre a cultura Woke e uma religião parece exagerada, mas, no fim, é bem suportada pela argumentação (se considerado o contexto de aplicação da analogia).
Diferentemente do caso do livro Woke, inc., a maior dificuldade de aceitação por quem se considera de esquerda é certamente o fato de várias das críticas do autor exigirem não só autocrítica da esquerda, mas principalmente o questionamento de várias das fontes que serviram para dar suporte à cultura Woke tal como se constituiu, incluindo Foucault, o pós-modernismo, a teoria crítica da raça e mesmo aspectos do Marxismo ao estilo de Paulo Freire (cujo autor critica em um artigo).
