Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith, the English historical novelist who rose to fame and over eight million book sales, through his literary creation, Horatio Hornblower, a introverted, self-doubting English sea captain. The eleven-book series launched in 1937 with The Happy Return, was hugely successful and lauded by critics, ‘Hornblower is Hamlet in charge of a battleship’ New York Times.
