Damani is tired. Her father just died on the job at a fast-food joint, and now she lives paycheck to paycheck in a basement, caring for her mom and driving for an app that is constantly cutting her take. Then she gives a ride to Jolene (five stars, obviously). Jolene seems like she could be the perfect girlfriend--attentive, attractive, an ally--and their chemistry is off the charts. Jolene's done the reading, she goes to every protest, and she says all the right things. So maybe Damani can look past the one thing that's holding her back: she's never dated anyone with money before, not to mention a white girl with money. But just as their romance intensifies and Damani finally lets her guard down, Jolene does something unforgivable, setting off an explosive chain of events.

A wild, one-sitting read brimming with dark comedy, and piercing social commentary and announcing Priya Guns's feverishly original voice, Your Driver Is Waiting is a crackling send-up of our culture of modern alienation.

Your Driver is Waiting me pegou da primeira à última página, daquele jeito bom que me joga dentro da cabeça da protagonista e me faz esquecer que estou lendo.

Seguir Damani em sua luta capitalista diária pelo mundo dos motoristas de aplicativo — suas rotinas e reivindicações, frustrações e descobertas — foi uma experiência e tanto e, embora eu reconheça que tenham ocorrido aqueles momentos WTF no fluxo de consciência, eu entendi que a estranheza ajudou a tornar essa história ainda mais única.

Infelizmente, não tenho muitas lembranças de Taxi Driver (assisti uma única vez, há um bom tempo) pra poder fazer comparações mais exatas, mas senti que algo da atmosfera do filme conseguiu ser transferida pro livro. Existem décadas de distância entre uma obra e outra, claro, mas algo da essência prevalece sim.

Essa história é forte candidata a minha favorita do mês, com o humor ácido e a narrativa ligeira. Sem falar na relação sáfica que apresenta um romantismo inusitado e intenso em meio ao resto dos elementos. Pra mim fez sentido e, mesmo tendo sido usado como âncora pro grande conflito, eu me vi torcendo pelo casal até o final (eu perdoo fácil).

O que me impediu de dar nota máxima, no entanto, foi o terceiro ato que deixou um tantozinho a desejar, mas não vou elaborar pra não soltar spoiler.

Recomendo pra quem gosta de fúria feminina, mulheres unhinged (talvez) beirando o obsessivo, críticas sociais e discussão sobre intolerância/ativismo branco/raça/etnia (protag é do Sri Lanka), conhecer novas culturas, casais sáficos e monólogos internos.
