Now remembered mainly as the impressionistic historian of the French Revolution and as a fore- runner of the authoritarian ideologies of the twentieth century, Carlyle enjoyed in his long lifetime an immense reputation as a prophet and preacher. For an anonymous correspondent he was 'an honoured and trusted teacher', for Charles Dickens the man who 'knows everything', for Matthew Arnold a 'moral desperado'. Certainly the voice of Thomas Carlyle is one of the most compelling of nineteenth-century England. This selection is intended to be representative of all stages of his career, rather than a 'Best of Carlyle'. It includes the whole of Chartism and chapters from Sartor Resartus, The French Revolution, Heroes and Hero-Worship, Past and Present and the history of Frederick the Great. The cover, designed by Germano Facetti, shows a detail from a portrait of Thomas Carlyle by John Everett Millais, in the National Portrait Gallery, London
