While on her normal daily walk with her dog in the forest woods, our protagonist comes across a note, handwritten and carefully pinned to the ground with a frame of stones. "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body". Our narrator is deeply shaken; she has no idea what to make of this. She is new to area, having moved her from her longtime home after the death of her husband, and she knows very few people. And she's a little shaky even on best days. Her brooding about this note quickly grows into a full-blown obsession, and she begins to devote herself to exploring the possibilities of her conjectures about who this woman was and how she met her fate. Her suppositions begin to find echoes in the real world, and with mounting excitement and dread, the fog of mystery starts to form into a concrete and menacing shape. But as we follow her in her investigation, strange dissonances start to accrue, and our faith in her grip on reality weakens, until finally, just as she seems be facing some of the darkness in her own past with her late husband, we are forced to face the prospect that there is either a more innocent explanation for all this or a much more sinister one - one that strikes closer to home.

Her name was Magda

Depois que li "my year of rest and relaxation" decidi que leria todos os outros livros dessa autora, terminei todos os livros com a mesma sensação agridoce, não é ruim, mas também não é bom.

Death in her hands conta a história de uma senhora que enquanto está caminhando com o seu cachorro em uma floresta próxima de sua casa e acha uma nota que dizia "Seu nome era Magda. Ninguém nunca saberá quem a matou. Não fui eu. Aqui jaz seu cadáver.". Esse bilhete permeia os pensamentos de nossa nossa narradora criando assim um ímpeto nela de investigar o ocorrido.

Acho muito errado recomendar esse livro como um thriller, o começo passa até essa ideia só que com o decorrer do livro a história fica mais e mais maçante e confusa se perdendo completamente. Durante o livro me questionei muito sobre a veracidade dos fatos, existiu mesmo um bilhete ou foi um processo dissociativo da Vesta? gostei bastante de como foi mostrado a decreptação da sanidade dela, as discussões sobre solidão e também questionei se poderia a solidão na qual ela vivia tê-la levado a loucura.

No final do livro percebemos que a Magda é uma mera peça para o início dos questionamentos da Vesta sobre a sua própria vida, desejos não realizados, se a vida que ela levava com o marido antes da morte dele tinha valido a pena, se nas condições que ela se encontra vale a pena viver ou não. Vejo também o título a ambiguidade do título como uma dica para essa teoria. Seria a Vesta desde o início a própria Magda?
