Annihilation tells the story of the twelfth expedition through the narration of a nameless biologist attached to the mission. A reticent, solitary woman, the biologist brings her own personal secrets with her. She is accompanied by a psychologist, anthropologist, and surveyor, their stated mission to chart the wilderness, take samples, and expand the Southern Reach’s understanding of Area X.

But they soon find out that the information given to them about Area X is incomplete or inaccurate, and that they are being manipulated by forces both strange and all too familiar. The old abandoned lighthouse on the coast is more than it seems. A moaning in the distance at dusk appears to have no natural cause. A tunnel plunging into the ground isn’t on any map.

In Area X, they will all find out what it truly means to face the unknown. Adapt or die.

Aniquilação de Jeff Vandermeer é uma história confusa em vários momentos, complexa e até cansativa, mas não é ruim.

A mistura de weird fiction, ficção científica, horror e horror cósmico é o que faz esse livro ser tão interessante. Ao decorrer da narrativa, o autor consegue estabelecer e despertar no leitor um assombro e fascínio pela exploração do desconhecido na Área X, um local abandonado com um ecossistema único e assustador. São poucas as informações reveladas enquanto a história avança, e acredito que isso é o que faz o livro ser tão viciante; é uma busca constante por uma explicação para o que está acontecendo até - puff - chegar no final. As personagens são todas instigantes e profundas e, mesmo que a história mostre apenas um ponto de vista, é possível visualizar a complexidade dos sentimentos e das escolhas de todas elas.

O final é uma viagem maluca, mas acho que é um final bem comum nos livros desse gênero.
