About the authors:

J.M. Roberts, CBE, published The Penguin History of the World in 1976 to immediate acclaim. His other major books include The Paris Commune from the Right, The Triumph of the West (which was also a successful television series), The Penguin History of Europe and The Penguin History of the Twentieth Century. He died in 2003.

Odd Arne Westad, FBA, is Professor of International History at the London School of Economics. He has published fifteen books on modern and contemporary international history, among them The Global Cold War, which won the Bancroft Prize, and Decisive Encounters, a standard history of the Chinese civil war. He also served as general co-editor of the Cambridge History of the Cold War.

Uma ótima obra de referência

Percorrer cerca de 1.200 páginas pode parecer uma tarefa hercúlea (ainda mais quando se trata de um livro escrito em inglês), mas a empreitada vale a pena e é muito prazerosa. Obviamente, mesmo num calhamaço como esse, não é possível descer a muitos pormenores de vários acontecimentos históricos. Mas o livro dá conta do recado. Ademais, a leitura é bastante agradável e até nos deparamos, vez por outra, com uma ironia ali e uma alfinetada acolá. São raras, mas existem e tornam a leitura descontraída.

Cabe destacar que, ao contrário de outros livros do gênero, o autor e o atualizador da obra não se prendem exclusivamente à história da Europa (e das Américas) com uma ou outra pincelada em outros povos. Há alguns capítulos voltados exclusivamente para a China e a Índia, por exemplo, e bons recortes sobre a África e outras partes do globo.
