Eu me apaixonei por essa história. É uma linda revelação da vida de uma pessoa.

Gifty é uma brilhante pós graduada de neurociência em Stanford e, como cientista, ela observa as coisas objetivamente, tentando fazer suposições com base nos fatos à sua frente. Mas o que vemos e testemunhamos não é suficiente para compreender totalmente um fenômeno, especialmente quando esse fenômeno é a vida de uma pessoa.

Gifty é uma pessoa fechada, que não compartilha muito com as pessoas ao seu redor. Para eles, ela é uma cientista brilhante que sabe onque quer da vida, mas eles não sabem que seu interesse em entender como o vício funciona vem de testemunhar a luta de seu irmão contra um vício em opioides ou a depressão de sua mãe. Vinda de uma família religiosa, Gifty considera a fé e a ciência maneiras válidas de olhar para o mundo, mas nenhuma delas responde plenamente às suas questões transcendentais sobre o porquê de tudo isso. O reino transcendental onde ela encontra significado é o reino do próprio contar histórias.
