“These Violent Delights” é um livro de ficção histórica retratando o ano de 1926 em Xangai, onde Juliette e Roma— ambos herdeiros das maiores gangues rivais que por lá comandam, decidem juntar seus conhecimentos territoriais com finalidade de resolver um enigma envolvendo uma besta do mar que espreita a cidade.

O enredo nos promete grandes mistérios envolvendo uma criatura fantástica que ataca grupos de pessoas causando chacinas misteriosas, contudo invés disso em sua maioria “These Violent Delights” nos entrega uma porção de diversas intrigas políticas na velha China. Sabendo disso, é importante acentuar-la como uma experiência de ritmo lento, e apesar de reter uma premissa interessante, a fluidez da história peca nos primeiros capítulos vindo a melhorar consideravelmente a partir da metade— e embora seja considerada uma releitura de “Romeu e Julieta”, é essencial realçar que seu propósito principal não poderia estar mais longe do romance.
Inicialmente não tive tanto envolvimento sentimental com os personagens (e apreciava muito mais os secundários), todavia isso mudou quando alcancei o desfecho deste livro, com aquele típico final que lhe deixa curiosa para iniciar o segundo volume o mais rápido possível. Em geral, apesar de seus baixos, achei uma leitura bem construída e interessante que definitivamente me cativou o suficiente para tentar a sorte com o segundo livro logo.
