A irrupção de Gaia na forma de terror

"Annihilation" é uma história que poderia ser descrita como um horror gótico-terrano, onde o cósmico (no sentido lovecraftiano) encontra o terrano em um símbolo da irrupção de Gaia. Um evento misterioso cria (traz?) a Área X, repleta de formas ao mesmo tempo familiares e alienígenas - a simetria entre Torre e Farol. A narradora faz parte de uma equipe de especialistas que é enviada a esse lugar ao mesmo tempo paradisíaco-natural e infernal-antinatural, como parte de uma expedição para tentar entender a Área. Os objetivos dessa expedição nunca são explicitados, mas sabemos que não é a primeira. O que encontram lá é uma metáfora dos mundo por vir, , uma aliança multi-espécies pós-apocalipse climático.
