For several years Edward Riedinger, the author of this textbook, has been my private English teacher. It is, therefore, with great pleasure that I introduce his work to the attention of other students.

Throughout my career I have felt, as everyone, the urgent need which there is in the modern world for English. For myself this need has been especially true in governmental, diplomatic, economic, and technical fields.

But not only these activities have attracted and sustained my interest in the study of English. In relation to the United States, a knowledge of this language has led me to the study of American history and literature and thus to a more intimate awareness of the social, political, and cultural achievements of this country. Its many accomplishments are of profound interest to Brazilians engaged in the development of their own country, that development which has been the guiding ideal of my life.

With these benefits in mind, therefore, I present this work and its subjects for the use they surely have for every Brazilian.
