A spine-tingling standalone novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune--a supernatural road-trip thriller featuring an extraordinary young girl and her two unlikely protectors on the run from cultists and the government. There's nothing more human than a broken heart. In the spring of 1995, Nate Cartwright has lost everything: his parents are dead, his only brother wants nothing to do with him, and he's been fired from his job as a journalist in Washington, DC. With nothing left to lose, he returns to his family's summer cabin outside the small mountain town of Roseland, Oregon, to try and find some sense of direction. The cabin should be empty. It's not. Inside is a man named Alex. And with him is an extraordinary ten-year-old girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader. Artemis, who isn't exactly as she appears. Soon it becomes clear that Nate must make a choice: let himself drown in the memories of his past, or fight for a future he never thought possible. Because the girl is special. And forces are descending upon them who want nothing more than to control her.

Okay, so this book was not at all what I expected. I can definitely say that alien stories are not for me. This was very sweet, and I LOVED Art. But the atmosphere of roadstrip and aliens and cults and cockoo people is not for me. I’m a dragons, magic and swords girly. These 3 stars are solely for Art and the beautiful writing. But I couldn’t connect to Nate or Alex AT ALL, and didn’t ship them as well. I thought that this story needed a very downlow romance with cute scenes and a sweet ending. But they didn’t have any cute scenes up until 60% of the book (and by cute scene i mean an awkward kiss and a SUPER EXPLICIT GAY SEX SCENE that came on out of nowhere) and let me say, i’ve never been so uncomfortable reading something. However, I thought this story was going to end differently than it did. I loved the epilogue and all of the talk about humanity, love, and family but I just didn’t vibe with Peter’s cult (another thing I found out I don’t like to read about) and I kinda pushed through this ending of the book. But it was a good experience overall and I know TJ KNOWS how to write stunning children so Art will have a place in my heart forever!
