A woman takes a holiday in the Austrian mountains, spending a few days with her cousin and his wife in their hunting lodge. When the couple fails to return from a walk, the woman sets off to look for them. But her journey reaches a sinister and inexplicable dead end. She discovers only a transparent wall behind which there seems to be no life. Trapped alone behind the mysterious wall she begins the arduous work of survival.

This is at once a simple account of potatoes and beans, of hoping for a calf, of counting matches, of forgetting the taste of sugar and the use of one's name, and simultaneously a disturbing dissection of the place of human beings in the natural world.

Os relatos da última mulher viva do mundo

Aqui temos uma protagonista que se vê completamente sozinha, e separada do mundo para sempre, devido a um fenômeno inexplicável. Para sobreviver, ela aprende a lidar com a natureza, seus animais e seus frutos. Os relatos dela sobre serrar madeira, plantar batatas e ordenhar a única vaca que ela possui ocupam boa parte do livro, e até o deixam monótono em certos momentos. As passagens que tornam o livro interessante envolvem o vínculo afetivo que ela cria com os seus animais, e as reflexões que ela faz nos interludios dessas atividades tão repetitivas. Reflexões sobre sua relação com a natureza, o machismo, a vida nas cidades, o tempo e o significado da existência.
Me lembrou muito Eu que Nunca Conheci os Homens, outro livro sobre uma mulher que passa a lidar com o fardo de ser a última pessoa viva do mundo, que eu também gosto muito.
