O "profeta" da geração beat rompeu, nos anos 40, com os valores da sociedade norte-americana, adotando um estilo de vida pouco convencional. Com o amigo Neal Cassidy, viajou pelos Estados Unidos, vivendo as experiências que depois relataria em seus romances autobiográficos. Kerouac escrevia de forma espontânea, num processo denominado sketching. Seu primeiro livro, The Town and the City (1950), foi bem recebido pela crítica, porém um fracasso comercial. Escreveu mais de 12 romances, ficando famoso com a publicação de On the Road (Pé na Estrada), de 1957. Nesse livro, deu forma e conteúdo ao modo de vida de sua geração.
