In the cloud-washed airspace between the cornfields of Illinois and blue infinity, a man puts his faith in the propeller of his biplane. For disillusioned writer and itinerant barnstormer Richard Bach, belief is as real as a full tank of gas and sparks firing in the cylinders...until he meets Donald Shimoda--former mechanic and self-described messiah who can make wrenches fly and Richard's imagination soar.... In Illusions, the unforgettable follow-up to his phenomenal bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach takes to the air to discover the ageless truths that give our souls wings: that people don't need airplanes to soar...that even the darkest clouds have meaning once we lift ourselves above them... and that messiahs can be found in the unlikeliest places--like hay fields, one-traffic-light midwestern towns, and most of all, deep within ourselves.

You teach best what you most need to learn. I don’t know how I could possibly learn this stuff.” “Practice. A little theory and a lot of practice,” he said. “Listen!” he called across the gulf between us. “This world? And everything in it? Illusions, Richard! Every bit of it illusions! Do you understand that?” There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in its hands. You seek problems because you need their gifts. The flying that was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to our passengers was for me routine, overshadowed by that strange uneasiness. My adventure was this character I was flying with “Well, I want to know why the world is and what it is and why I live here and where I’m going next: .. I want to know that. How to fly without an airplane, if I had a wish.” “Sorry.” “Sorry what?” “Doesn’t work that way. If you learn what this world is, how it works, you automatically start getting miracles, what will be called miracles. But of course nothing is miraculous. Learn what the magician knows and it’s not magic anymore.” “But why would anybody want to be horrified? Or bored?” “Because they think they deserve it for horrifying somebody else, or they like the excitement of horrification, or that boring is the way they think films have to be. Can you believe that lots of people for reasons that are very sound to them enjoy believing that they are helpless in their own films? No, you can’t.” “No, I can’t,” I said. “Until you understand that, you will wonder why some people are unhappy. They are unhappy because they have chosen to be unhappy, You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however. “That’s my little way of helping you be precise in your thinking,” he said mildly. Every person, all the events of your life are there because you have drawn them there. What you choose to do with them is up to you. “Spoken like a true messiah! Simple, direct, quotable, and it doesn’t answer the question unless somebody takes the time to think carefully about it.” The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.

    Richard Bach
