Nasceu em 1930, em Xangai, na China. Depois do ataque a Pearl Harbor, foi mandado com sua família para um campo de prisioneiros. Voltou à Inglaterra em 1946 e relatou sua experiência no romance autobiográfico Império do sol, levado ao cinema por Steven Spielberg. Estudou medicina e foi piloto da RAF no Canadá. Publicou seu primeiro conto em 1956. Dono de uma vasta e premiada obra, seu primeiro romance, <i>The drowned world</i> (1962), foi considerado um divisor de águas na ficção científica. Morreu em 2009, vítima de câncer.
