Tom Jones é uma comédia de erros.

O sarcasmo de Henry Fielding quanto a sociedade de seu tempo é destilado palavra a palavras e ninguém escapa, das instituições à arraia-miúda. Ainda assim, é possível ver que não há propriamente amargura na história - Tom Jones, o personagem título, é o típico ingênio cabeça-oca que se mete em várias confusões, muitas delas bem maliciosa.

Não se assuste com o tamanho do livro, pois os capítulos são curtos. Raros são aqueles que ultrapassam 4 páginas.
