London: Thames and Hudson, 1963. 331 pp., 8 colour pls., 370 illustrations. 42s. / [ASIN: B000NWXI3Q ]: A pictorial history and in essence, medical archaeology, by the author of The Century of the Surgeon. In Egypt, the Ebers Papyrus (not later than 2100 B.C.) is actually a first textbook; there too, where they tried to cure, they also perfected the art of embalming and from the buried evidence many of the diseases then prevalent can now be identified. Including India, China, Mexico and Peru, this provides a visual history-- there are some 370 illustrations, eight in full color, and it is a fascinating book to look at and learn from.

[About the Author ]: Jürgen Thorwald was a German writer, romancist, journalist and historian known for his works describing the history of forensic medicine, of World War II (...) After the war, he used the pseudonym Jürgen Thorwald in order to be able to work under Allied occupation. In 1947, he legally adopted the new name. (...) Thorwald's book 'The Century of the Detective' was nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1966 in Best Fact Crime category, but he lost to Truman Capote's 'In Cold Blood'.

É uma ótima opção...mas, destinada a um público mais específico. É pura informação de medicina, mas medicina dos tempos remotos, muito antes do que se imaginava ser a origem. O interessante é perceber como os egípcios detinham conhecimentos medicinais para males que nos acometem até hoje... e a gente ainda se pergunta de onde tiravam esses "remédios" já que não havia nenhum embasamento científico nas descobertas; por exemplo, no caso do rudimentar teste de gravidez que faziam e que a ciência de hoje explica porque funcionava, ou o uso de urina como antisséptico em alguns casos e a medicina de hoje explica qual o princípio disso... enfim, mesmo usando métodos extremamente arcaicos, eles sabiam o que estavam fazendo. E tinham êxito em muitos casos. Adorei o livro! Nota "S" de saber nunca é demais.
