David Mazzuchelli iniciou a sua carreira no final dos anos 80, trabalhando no gênero “super-heróis” para a Marvel e a DC. Comics, as duas maiores editoras de quadrinhos dos Estados Unidos. Tornou-se desenhador regular de Demolidor, começando a afirmar o seu estilo e a fazer-se notar. Frank Miller viria a mostrar interesse em colaborar com Mazzucchelli, tendo ambos assinado “Born Again” e “Batman, Ano Um”. Abandonou as séries marcadamente comerciais em que trabalhara e, depois de ter publicado três números da sua revista “Rubber Blanket”, e de ter colaborado em diversas antologias e revistas como “Drawn & Quaterly”, “Snake Eyes”, “Zero Zero” e “Little Lit”, Mazzucchelli, em colaboração com Paul Karasik, transformou “Cidade de Vidro”, de Paul Auster, numa novela gráfica, uma obra que confirmou a sua grande notoriedade.
