As her young daughter grows up, Victoria feels her parental control diminishing as the attractions of the Staveneys′ world exert themselves. An honest and often uncomfortable look at race relations in London over the past few decades, Lessing reaffirms her brilliance at demonstrating the effect of society on the individual. With these and two other equally brilliant novellas, Lessing has proven once again that she is one of our most valuable and insightful living authors.

Doris May Tayler
Filha de pais britânicos, nasceu em 1919, em Kermanshah, na Pérsia (atual Irã). Em 1925, mudou-se com a família para uma fazenda na Rodésia do Sul (hoje Zimbábue). Lá viveu até 1949, quando foi para Londres, levando o manuscrito de seu primeiro romance, <i>The grass is singing</i>, que obteve expressivo sucesso internacional quando lançado. Autora de uma obra extensa, que inclui ensaios, contos, romances e textos memorialísticos, Doris Lessing ganhou diversos prêmios, entre eles o Somerset Maugham (1954), o W. H. Smith Award (1986), o Mondello (1987), o Prêmio Internacional da Catalunha (1999), o Príncipe de Astúrias (2001) e o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura (2007). A Academia Sueca a definiu como "<i>a contadora épica da experiência feminina, que com ceticismo, ardor e uma força visionária escrutinou uma civilização dividida</i>".
