John William Cheever
Nasceu em Quincy, Massachusetts, em 1912, de uma família branca, anglo-saxã e puritana. Morador de subúrbios de classe média alta durante quase toda a vida, dali tirou inspiração e ambiente para suas obras ficcionais. Depois de colaborar por muitos anos com a revista New Yorker, lança seu primeiro romance, <i>The Wapshot Chronicle</i>, em 1958, pelo qual recebe o National Book Award. Publicou ainda diversas coletâneas de contos - entre as quais <i>The Stories of John Cheever</i> - e os romances <i>The Wapshot Scandal</i> (1964), <i>Bullet Park</i> (1969) e <i>Falconer</i> (1977). Considerado um dos maiores contistas americanos, Cheever recebeu, dois meses antes de falecer, em 1982, a Medalha Nacional para Literatura pela American Academy of Arts and Letters.
