Police Officer Meg Barrett, the only woman on the small Broken Branch police force, has responded to domestic abuse calls, exploding meth labs, hunting and drunk driving accidents. She prides herself in being impervious to the emotion and heartache that often accompany her chosen profession, but nothing prepares her for the potential devastation this one lone man could have on her community and on her own future. Heather Gudenkauf é a caçula de seis filhos. Aos 3 anos mudou-se para o Iowa, onde permaneceu até à idade adulta. Tendo nascido com uma deficiência auditiva profunda unilateral, Heather tendia a usar os livros como um recuo, para escapar do mundo ao seu redor. Licenciou-se em Educação Básica na Universidade do Iowa e passou os últimos dezoito anos a trabalhar com alunos de todas as idades. Heather vive em Dubuque, Iowa, com o seu marido, os seus três filhos e um perdigueiro muito mimado, o Maxine. Em seu tempo livre Heather gosta de passar tempo com sua família, ler, caminhar e correr.
