A meglomaniac Boer frontiersman wreaks hideous vengence on a Hottentot tribe for undermining the 'natural' order of his universe with their anarchic rival order,mocking him and subjecting him to the humiliations of his own all too palpable flesh. Both the 18th century Jacobus Coetzee and the 20th century Euguene Dawn are in the business of pushing back the frontiers of knowledge and are dealers in death who denounce their own humanity and spurn their feelings of guilt. With immense power and economy in these two narratives, Coetzee has crystalized in their absurdity and horror the extremes of scientific evangelism and heroic exploration.

John Maxwell Coetzee
Nasceu na África do Sul, em 1940. Um dos mais respeitados escritores sul-africanos contemporâneos, autor de ficção, ensaios de crítica literária e memórias, publicou mais de uma dezena de livros, entre os quais "Cenas de uma vida na província", "No coração do país" e "Terras de sombras". Em 2003, recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de literatura. Foi professor nos Estados Unidos e atualmente leciona literatura na Universidade da Cidade do Cabo. Recebeu prêmios na França, na Irlanda e em Israel e foi o primeiro autor agraciado duas vezes com o Booker Prize, o mais importante da Grã-Bretanha e um dos principais da cena literária internacional.
