Foi uma escritora americana e editora da Paris Review, que escreveu as biografias de Robert F. Kennedy, American Journey: The Times of Robert Kennedy - com o auxílio do jornalista esportivo George Plimpton (1927-2003), que ajudou a financiar a Paris Review - e da musa do pintor pop Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, Edie: American Girl. Pioneira ao usar a história oral como técnica literária, Jean Stein escreveu três livros, sendo o mais recente A Oeste do Éden - Um Lugar Americano, que traz em seu terceiro capítulo a história de uma suicida, Jane Garland, uma das cinco histórias do livro. A escritora teve dois casamentos: com o advogado William Canden Heuvel e, em 1985, com o médico Torsten Wiesel. Eles se separaram há dez anos. Assim como alguns de seus personagens, cometeu suicídio.
