For many locals, there is no more evocative love letter to San Francisco than Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City. This 1978 novel, originally serialized in the San Francisco Chronicle, centers around a young Midwestern woman who impulsively moves to San Francisco in 1976. Mary Anne Singleton, as she is known, falls in with many a colorful character and, not surprisingly, risqué adventures ensue. The story garnered even more fans when it was made into a PBS miniseries in 1993 with Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis in lead roles, and Tales of the City has been a cult favorite ever since.
