Dublin native Freda Wilson considers herself to be an acquired taste. She has a habit of making offensive jokes and speaking her mind too often. She doesn't have the best track record with first impressions, which is why she gets a surprise when her new neighbour Nicholas takes a shine to her.

Nicholas is darkly handsome, funny and magnetic, and Freda feels like her black and white existence is plunged into a rainbow of colour when she's around him. When he walks into a room he lights it up, with his quick wit and charisma. He is a travelling cabaret performer, but Freda doesn't know exactly what that entails until the curtains pull back on his opening night.

She is gob-smacked and entirely intrigued to see him take to the stage in drag. Later on, Nicholas asks her if she would like to become his show assistant. Excited by the idea, she jumps at the chance. Soon she finds herself immersed in a world of wigs, make-up and high heels, surrounded by pretty men and the temptation of falling for her incredibly beautiful employer.

In this story of passion and sexual discovery, Nicholas and Freda will contend with jealousy, emotional highs and lows, and the kind of love that only comes around once in a lifetime.

(se vc for dodóizinho, pule esse texto e vida que segue porque, se vier falar merda, vai sair cagado.)

Perdi a conta de quantas vezes eu li, reli, re-reli esse livro.
Porque sou dessas de apelar pra favorito no menor chilique literário.
“Nossa, então eu vou amar porque é excelente?”, diria o acalorado leitor.

Bem, se você é daquelas que adora um romance com mocim que masca abelha pra mitigar o excesso de testosterona, CEO ricão, macho-alfa do tipo possessivo e outros clichês, esse é primeiro motivo pra DESISTIR já que, em Painted Faces, o mocinho é uma Drag Queen.
Troçudo, com MUITA pegada, clone do Giulio Berruti, atrevido, sabe o que quer e corre atrás, mas... uma Drag Queen.

Já a mocinha pode não ser do seu agrado. Em tempo de histeria com a quase imposição de empoderamento feminino (emotion olhinhos revirando), Freda é uma mulher comum, cheia de inseguranças, autodepreciativa e com algumas opiniões que vão contra o fluxo do pseudo-feminismo-imaturo de hoje. E amei isso nela. Amei que a autora não quis forçar a personagem pra se enquadrar a padrões xexelentos de algumas mulheres birrentas. ( + emotion olhinhos revirando)

Sobre o enredo, é basicamente sobre o desenvolvimento do relacionamento dos dois, o que pode te deixar entediado. Mas você ri muito com a Fred; se entristece/revolta com a história de Nicholas e muda sua perspectiva sobre alguns assuntos como, por exemplo, homens (ou mulheres) abusadores não podem ser apenas presos... eles precisam ter o pinto massacrado um pouco por dia pra sofrer bastante, até, enfim, ser cortado com faca cega.
Mas a mulher abusadora não tem pinto. O que fazer?

O mais triste é que nenhuma editora publicou Painted faces aqui no Brasil.
