Becoming involved in the arts is not a one-step process but a progression through several stages. Upon this simple, yet valuable, premise, rests Expanding the Audience for the Performing Arts. According to the author, a person travels from disinterest to active attendance as they approach becoming part of the audience for the performing arts. For arts administrators seeking to expand their audiences, understanding where on this continuum rest the people they seek to attract is critical to their success. A six-stage model is proposed in this study and is tested using data from the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts. The findings validate the usefulness of this approach for both arts managers and future researchers in the field.
