Dividido em quatro períodos de tempo, 1533-1558, 1558-1572, 1572-1587 e 1588-1603, a coletânea traz os escritos da rainha Elizabeth I, monarca da Inglaterra entre 1558-1603.

Seus escritos são cartas, discursos, orações e poemas. Para ser verdadeiramente apreciada é necessário algum conhecimento histórico do período de seu reinado (já ter lido dois ou três livros sobre o tema e pelo menos uma biografia). Com esse conhecimento prévio pode-se fazer conexões com os assuntos das cartas e discursos. A coleção não é feita para o leitor leigo.

Os poemas são interessantes, alguns são surpreendentemente bons, outros só marginais, mas considerando o período muito fecundo em grandes poetas como Ben Jonson, Edmund Spenser, Philip Sidney, John Donne, Thomas Wyatt e os sonetos de William Shakespeare, a rainha não fica muito aquém. O ponto baixo da coleção é que os poemas foram modernizados, não retendo sua dicção renascentista.
