His work surveys the content, style and metres of traditional Viking poetry and includes a lengthy poem of Snorrie's own, praising the king of Norway. Ironically, Snorri was killed in his own cellar in Iceland in 1241 on the instigation of the king of Norway, as a result of political intrigue. The Edda contains the most extensive account of Norse myths and legends that has survived from the Middle Ages as well as the popular stories of Odin winning back the mead of poetic inspiration and Thor fishing for the Midgard serpent.

Snorri Sturluson
Snorri Sturluson (1178 – 23 de setembro de 1241) foi um historiador, poeta e político islandês. Por duas vezes ele foi lögsögumaður do parlamento islandês, o Alþingi. Ele foi o autor da Edda em prosa, que consiste em três partes: o Gylfaginning (uma narrativa de mitologia nórdica), o Skáldskaparmál (um livro sobre linguagem poética) e o Háttatal (uma lista de formas de verso). Além disso, ele foi o autor do Heimskringla, uma história dos reis nórdicos que começa na Ynglinga saga, com a história lendária, e vai até o começo da história medieval da Escandinávia. Por motivos estilísticos e metodológicos, atribui-se a ele a Saga de Egill, mas muitos negam esta hipótese.
