Meet El Borbah, a 400-pound private eye who wears a Mexican wrestler's tights and eerie mask. Subsisting entirely on junk food and beer, El Borbah conducts his investigations with tough talk and a short temper. He smashes through doors and skulls as he stalks a perfectly realized film-noir city filled with punks, geeks, business-suited creeps and mad scientists. El Borbah features five science-fiction and true-detective episodes: In "Robot Love," rebellious kids in nightclubs replace their "parts" with mechanical substitutes as part of a new fad, only to find that their parents have been automating themselves all along; in "Love in Vein" a mad visionary sperm donor plans a master race and turns "his" kids against their parents; "Bone Voyage" details the exploits of a cult called the Brotherhood of the Bone, a kind of cross between the Masons and the Mansons. The fantastic plots take up the weird fears of a scientific society, but the action is pure pulp. Charles Burns effortlessly spins yarns with gritty punchlines and pictures so perfect they must have existed in some collective memory of junk drama. And through it all crashes El Borbah, trying to make an honest buck from dishonest people.

Charles Burns
Charles Burns nasceu em 1955 em Washington, D.C., e cresceu em Seattle durante os anos 1970. Sua obra começou a aparecer e a se destacar na revista Raw, de Art Spiegelman, em meados dos anos 1980, seguida por uma variedade de quadrinhos e projetos, de colaborações para revistas de HQs como Métal Hurlant, Frigidaire, El Víbora e Schwermetall, à capas para os álbuns de Iggy Pop e para publicações como Esquire, New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, Time e The Believer. Black Hole foi publicado originalmente de forma seriada em doze edições pela Kitchen Sink Press e pela Fantagraphics entre 1993 e 2004, e reunida em volume único pela Pantheon em 2005, para aclamação mundial. Em 2007, Burns contribui para antologia animada de horror Peur(s) du noir (Medo(s) do escuro), ao lado de nomes como Lorenzo Mattotti e Richard McGuire. Deu início a uma nova série em 2010, com X’ed Out, seguida por The Hive (2012) e Sugar Skull (2014), reunidas em Last Look em 2016 e ainda inédita no Brasil.
