In Hamburg, a dubious doctor creates a fantastic organization named BRAINETIC, where 16 famous scientists, kidnapped from all over Europe, are kept captive. In a terrible manner but, amazingly, without their knowledge, he manages to obtain qualified scientific information from their privileged brains and sell them to interested parties in the international market. All work phases are carried out theoretically by the scientists. His initial dream was to build an empire with many “human computers” and retain all the scientists of the world in his hands. The work of one of the scientists, though, makes the megalomaniac think he could develop a project that would give him total control over the Earth. But the scientists son, and a police officer from Hamburg, initiate a thorough investigation that leads to dramatic episodes in Hamburg, London, Birmingham and the Falkland Islands. After a few months, when everything seems submerged in deep mystery, the criminal makes some mistakes and help knock planes down.

Entertaining and aligned to scientific discoveries

I read this book after reading Dr Michio Kaku’s new book “The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest To Understand, Enhance and Empower the Mind”, in which he discusses the possibility, in a not so distant future, of achieving mind control through the use of implants and also the possibility of creating a collective mind, in much the same way as the Borg did in the sci-fi TV series Star Trek. BRAINETIC was written back in in the 90’s and Mr Pedroso seemed to have a well informed eye in the future. It was rather interesting to see the very same idea, now discussed in a recent scientific book, used in a fiction book written decades ago. BRAINETIC is an unusual and provoking novel, with many dramatic moments, in a richly inventive and fantastic narrative. Kaffo is a great villain and the story’s hero is both believable and likeable. This is an original and highly entertaining book and I would be delighted if this story was told on the big screen.
