Nasceu em Dublin, na Irlanda. Publicou dois volumes de contos, reunidos sob o título de Yesterday’s Weather, um livro de não ficção, Making Babies, além de quatro romances, entre eles O encontro. Lançado no Brasil pela Alfaguara, o livro foi selecionado como o romance irlandês do ano e recebeu o Irish Fiction Award e o Man Booker Prize de 2007.
