Hayao Miyazaki (em japonês: 宮崎 駿?) (Tóquio, 5 de Janeiro de 1941) é um dos mais famosos e respeitados criadores do cinema da animação japonesa, o anime. Em 1982, enquanto trabalhava em seus filmes, Miyazaki escreveu e desenhou o mangá Kaze no tani no Naushika, mais conhecido internacionalmente como Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Utilizando alguns elementos que são considerados sua marca registrada em outros animados - o gosto pela aviação, ecologia e suas consequências e a ausência de um vilão da maneira como conhecemos - o mangá foi um grande sucesso, o que levou o diretor a preparar a versão animada de sua própria série de quadrinhos japoneses.
