A woman almost buried alive, a red horse with the letters W.V.B. on its head, a golden insect, a fisherman caught in a whirlpool... In these stories we meet people who experience extreme fear or hatred. Some are brought face-to-face with death by strange creatures or events. Others are threatened with painful death by their enemies. They all struggle to escape, but not all of them succeed. These stories also introduce us to the Frenchman, C. Auguste Dupin. Able to think clearly, notice the smallest of details and imagine the way a criminal's mind works, Dupin can solve the darkest mystery.

The book is really good, and the tales make you want to read more and more. Some are really hard it to believe, so unlikely to be real. My favorite tale is Read Death, it's very fantasy that's why I loved it! In addition The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart are pretty nice, because you're not expecting what happened in the end, since make me create a lot of kind of ends. Besides, The House of Usher and the William Wilson are really gloomy, since the thriller. The characters are kind of a ghost that it was following the storyteller! Therefore the ilustrations and activities help a lot, make you understand and fix the tales, while you're practicing your English.
