An Ember in the Ashes é o início de uma quadrilogia, e é o começo perfeito. O enredo constrói um universo que contém uma escola de soldados, imperador, tribos e escravos. Após a captura do irmão, Laia se associa aos rebeldes a fim de resgatá-lo, e sua missão é se tornar espiã na casa da Comandante, uma mulher extremamente cruel, e mãe de Elias, o melhor soldado de sua geração. O livro não tem muito elementos fantasiosos como estamos acostumados, como magia, mas aspectos como imortalidade, e nesse ponto se assemelha aos primeiros livros de Trono de Vidro. An Ember in the Ashes não é um fantasia adolescente com triângulo amoroso, e as personagens não se comportam de forma infantil, já que lidam apenas com problemas como questões sociais e violência. É uma fantasia incrível para fãs do gênero, especialmente para os que já se acostumaram com a estrutura tradicional.
