House of Leaves é um dos livros de terror mais interessante que já li nos últimos tempos e isso se deve a sua estrutura narrativa.

Primeiramente, fica mais fácil entender a proposta se a leitura de textos acadêmicos é familiar, pois trama trata-se de uma pesquisa com publicação acadêmica sobre um filme dito-real sobre uma casal paranormal. Assim, são dezenas de citações e formulações meticulosamente colocadas, mas com um grande porém... algumas são indicadas pelo próprio editor como erradas e fictícias, sejam em fatos ou em normals, e cabe ao leitor descobrí-las.

Tal pesquisa, contudo, é editada por um jovem sem instrução formal, Johnny Truant, que chega em contato com o texto após a morte de seu autor, Zampano. Assim, imagine um amontoado de relatos e análises, cheias de citações, intercaladas com o diário do próprio Johnny que começa a sofrer um colapso.

Esse incidente, o colapsar por assim dizer, é a força motriz de todos os acontecimentos e será repetidamente demonstrado até nas páginas finais do livro.

A influência de Stephen King e Stanley Kubrick é alegremente exposta não apenas no estilo, mas alardeada em homenagens. É possível perceber a influência de Lovecraft que por motivos óbvios é menos divulgada.

Ainda no quesito escrita, o autor segue um rigor acadêmico típico das ciências humanas - ou seja, várias tendências interpretativas são apresentadas e contra-argumentadas (e reargumentadas nas notas).

Recomendo a todos que gostariam de uma experiência literária diferente nesse gênero, mas desde já aviso, é um trabalho de paciência e persistência - típico de quem já passou pelas agruras de entregar uma monografia.
