Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, better known simply as Frankenstein, is a gothic horror novel inspired by the romantic movement, authored by Mary Shelley, a British writer born in London. The novel tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a natural science student who builds a monster in his laboratory. Mary Shelley wrote the story when she was only 19, between 1816 and 1817, and the work was first published in 1818, without credit to the author in the first edition. Currently, it is customary to consider the revised version of the third edition of the book, published in 1831, as the definitive one. The novel was very successful and generated a whole new genre of horror, having a great influence on Western literature and popular culture.
