Since the dawn of time, storytelling and the fantastic have gone hand in hand. All cultures have their myths – tales of gods and giants, monsters and marvels. An increasing interest in the roots of culture, together with a recognition of the importance of myth and archetype in understanding the human condition, led to a reflorescence of myth-based literature in the 20th century.
J.R.R. Tolkien, the reclusive, pipe-smoking Oxford don, was in the vanguard, and so great was his achievement that his name became virtually synonymous with the literature of fantasy.
The strength of Tolkien's work is in its fidelity to its roots, which lie in the legends of the Nordic world. Tolkien believed that the roots of myth and the roots of language are one and indivisible, and he demonstrated this belief by creating an entirely new language (Elvish) with its own grammar, its own beautiful script and its own mythology. it was a rarefied and highly personal world, yet it proved a fertile soil from which his great fantasy novels were to grow.
First of these, and for many the finest, was the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the sedentary hobbit who is persuaded by the benign wizard Gandalf into joining a treasure hunt. Bilbo survives a series of chilling adventures to become the unlikeliest of heroes in his confrontation with the dragon Smaug. These adventures are drawn from mythic roots - the river of forgetfulness, the trolls turned to stone by the touch of daylight, the ring of invisibility, the monster - and their mythic power is channelled through magnificent storytelling.

Começo a falar desse livro e também desse escritor no qual, particularmente, sou fã declarando, citando uma frase muito antiga do jornal The Sunday Times que se encontra na parte de trás das versões mais antigas dos livros de Tolkien, e que é de uma brutal perfeição. Eis a frase: O Mundo está divido entre aqueles que já leram O Hobbit e O Senhor dos Anéis e aqueles que ainda não leram.

Tolkien é com certeza um dos escritores mais brilhantes da história, e não ler uma de suas obras é um verdadeiro crime cultural. Muitos falam que suas obras são maçantes, duras, e sem ritmo. Eu não discordo! Já li muito suas obras e aponto com total segurança essas partes maçantes e sem ritmo. Mas, os livros de Tolkien possuem uma beleza e um encantamento que eu não encontrei em nenhuma obra lida nesses meus 20 anos de vida. São tantos detalhes, construções, paisagens, culturas, povos e línguas criados com tanta perfeição que é impossível ficar imune aos seus encantos.

O Hobbit é uma prova irrefutável de sua genialidade. E com uma alegria à mais. É um livro de facílima assimilação, que possui um ritmo e cadência não encontrada em O Silmarillion e muito menos em O Senhor dos Anéis. Para muitos se trata de uma literatura infanto-juvenil, e eu concordo. Quem dera que todas as literaturas desse gênero possuíssem tamanho enredo, potência e sabedoria. Afirmo sem medo, que nem As crônicas de Nárnia do não menos genial C. S. Lewis possui a grandeza de O Hobbit.

Você que ainda não leu O Hobbit que não perca mais tempo. Junte-se a grande parcela de pessoas nesse mundo que já se deparou com a genialidade de Tolkien, e se deixe encantar por essa grande obra. Que além de possuir uma linguagem fácil, um ritmo constante e ilustrações belíssimas, irá introduzi-lo a épica saga de O Senhor dos Anéis.

O Hobbit de J. R.R. Tolkien é sem dúvida uma das melhores obras já escritas na história.
