Charlotte Brontë died without finishing this fragment of a novel which, if Thackeray may be believed, she had read to her husband one evening before her death. Despite being unfinished the beginning has inspired other novelists to finish the work or build on the germ of a story contained in it. This edition contains the first two chapters as they appeared in Thackeray's Cornhill Magazine in April of 1860, along with his introduction to them as well as a brief biography of Charlotte Brontë.
