A scathing indictment of the New Soviet Man, "A Dog's Heart" was immediately banned by the Soviet government when it was first published in 1925: alternating lucid realism with pulse-raising drama, the novel captures perfectly the atmosphere of its rapidly changing times. Andrew Bromfield's vibrant translation is accompanied by an introduction by James Meek, which places the work in the context of the Russian class struggles of the era and considers the vision, progressive style and lasting relevance of an author who was isolated and suppressed during his lifetime. This edition also contains notes and a chronology. Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940) was born in Kiev, today the capital of Ukraine. After finishing high school, Bulgakov entered the Medical School of Kiev University, graduating in 1916. He wrote about his experiences as a doctor in his early works "Notes on Cuffs" and "Notes of a Young Country Doctor". His later works treated the subject of the artist and the tyrant under the guise of historical characters, but "The Master and Margarita" is generally considered his masterpiece. Fame, at home and abroad, was not to come until a quarter of a century after his death at Moscow in 1940. Mistura insólita de URSS pós-revolucionária e Frankenstein.

Uma história maluca e surreal, ao estilo de Bulgákov. Temos uma espécie de sátira ao regime bolchevique da URSS usando uma versão pastelão de "Frankenstein".

Um cão de rua subnutrido e vítima de maus tratos recebe abrigo na casa de um médico famoso por fazer cirugias exóticas. O que o pequeno cão, que foi batizado de Sharik, não sabia era que ele se tornaria uma cobaia do Dr. Phillip Philipovich. O cão recebeu os testítulos e a glândula pituitária de um jovem de 25 anos chamado Elim Chugunkin que foi morto a facada numa briga de bar. Após esta cirurgia o cão começa a se "humanizar" e é aqui que termina qualquer semelhança com "Frankenstein". O resultado da cirurgia é um humano com muitos instintos caninos (perseguir gatos, por exemplo) e com um comportamento bem "selvagem", agressivo, assediador e bem desbocado. O médico e nos seus assistentes passam ao leitor a impressão de que o resultado da cirurgia não foi o que eles esperavam. Mais engraçado ainda é que que Poligraph Poligraphovich Sharikov (o nome que o "novo humano" recebeu) faz amizade com revolucionários bolcheviques e torna-se um apoiante da causa. Sharikov ressente-se do seu "pai" e criador, a quem considera um burguês. Ele passa a ser um leitor de textos revolucionários como, por exemplo, a correspondência entre Engels e Kautsky.

Em resumo, temos um mostro do Frankenstein bolchevique que passa por algumas situações absolutamente hilariantes. Ao longo destas ocorrências, vemos muitas observações e referências a situação política da URSS na época em que a história foi escrita (1925).

Achei este livro uma boa porta de entrada para conhecer Bulgákov. É uma história muito mais simples de ler do que "O Mestre e Margarida", que tem várias narrativas em paralelo e muitas coisas escondidas nas entrelinhas. Para quem gosta de uma história insólita este livro é uma boa pedida.
