John Griffith Chaney
JACK LONDON nasceu em São Francisco, na Califórnia, em 1876. Seu padrasto, John London, tentou diversas ocupações, fazendo a família se mudar diversas vezes durante a infância de Jack, que aos 13 anos começou a trabalhar em uma fábrica de enlatados. Os anos seguintes foram de aventuras e instabilidade financeira. Jack foi pescador de ostras, marinheiro e militante socialista, acabou preso por vadiagem e, em 1897, decidiu acompanhar a corrida pelo ouro até Klondike, no Canadá. Voltou com pouco mais de quatro dólares em ouro em pó, mas usou essas experiências para escrever obras-primas como O chamado selvagem (1903), O lobo do mar (1904) e Caninos brancos (1906). Escritor americano de maior sucesso na primeira metade do século XX, London morreu em 1916, aos 40 anos.
